Canoe Making on the Northwest Coast

In our library class we read Jason's New Dugout Canoe. It is a story that describes how some Northwest Coast indigenous peoples make canoes.

After reviewing all the main points of the book, students were given three scripts based on the contents of this book.   They worked in groups using Chromebooks and created the following summary videos.

Video 1: Background Information About Northwest Coast Canoes

Video 2: How to Get Wood for a Dugout Canoe

Video 3: How to Make a Dugout Canoe

Inuit Hunting

We read and discussed our first story during our library learning commons time. From each story we read we are trying to learn:

  • Why are stories important to indigenous people?
  • Why do Elders play an important part in the lives of First Peoples?
  • What values were significant for local First Peoples?

This is our first attempt at making a summary of what we learned using a program called Adobe Spark Video.
